So, after several articles about the Step-By-Step WIP of Gob'Nan (see the Label "Gob'Nan Series" on the left side), I'm back with a rather more usual article about one of my latest work, and this time it's a Dwarf !

Donc, après plusieurs articles sur le Pas-À-Pas du WIP de Gob'Nan (voir le Libellé "Gob'Nan Series" sur la gauche), je suis de retour avec un article plus habituel concernant l'un de mes derniers travaux, et cette fois-ci il s'agit d'un Nain !

J'en suis très content !
— J'ai honte de l'avouer, une faute s'est glissée lors de la frappe dans le nom de la société qui me l'a commandé mais cette version est celle corrigée, la bonne ! ;) —.
This project started a while ago, when Vittorio from Terrible Kids Stuff contacted me to know if I could be interested by a commission for these companies.
I like to work with new people, bringing me a new kind of vision, and I already have heard from them (ex-Sergeant Blackart) via internet and the quality stuff they were doing (specially by working with skilled and talented people !).
So, I was very curious to know more about what they had in mind for me...
After the usual talk concerning rates and management, Vittorio offered me to work from a design created by Adrian Smith.
Of course, I was interested ! I love the work of Adrian Smith ! :)
And I actually already had the pleasure to work on a design he created (see the project for Conan named Zaporavo) before to sculpt this strong little fellow.
And since The Hobbit Trilogy was playing on Theaters during these last years, I got motivation and references ! :)
J'aime travailler avec de nouvelles personnes, m'apportant une nouvelle vision, et j'avais déjà entendu parler de cette compagnie (ex-Sergeant Blackart) via internet et de la qualité de ce qu'elle faisait (surtout en travaillant avec des gens doués et talentueux !).
J'étais donc très curieux d'en savoir plus, surtout ce qu'ils avaient en tête pour moi...
Après les discussions habituelles concernant les prix et l'organisation, Vittorio m'a proposé de travailler d'après un design créé par Adrian Smith.
Bien sûr que j'étais intéressé ! J'adore le travail d'Adrian Smith ! :)
D'ailleurs, j'ai eu l'occasion de travailler d'après un design qu'il a créé (allez voir le projet pour Conan appelé Zaporavo) avant de sculpter ce petit gars costaud.
Et comme la Triologie du Hobbit est passée au cinéma durant ces dernières années, j'avais motivation et références ! :)

En fait, je travaille actuellement sur des modèles 54 mm... Mais ce sera pour d'autres articles... ;)
Then, Vittorio provided a scaled reference for the Dwarf, for me to know where I had to go.
It is very useful to get this kind of reference/materials, for it clears eveything from the start.
And since he should be produced in resin, I was already confident I'd get nice details out of it !
Il est très utile d'avoir ce type de référence/matériel, car cela clarifie tout dès le début.
Et puisque'il est destiné à être produit en résine, j'étais confiant dans ma capacité à créer des détails bien sympas !
Vittorio told me that another artist, very talented, worked from the very same design but at a totally another scale : Joaquin Palacios sculpted Barin for Terrible Kids Stuff 75 mm range !
That's already very interesting to have to work from the same design at a new scale, but then, the most interesting part was that I was free to get my own vision of the art, not necessarily following Adrian nor Joaquin steps, as Joaquin actually did himself.
Very exciting !
I really like when the artist is trusted and specially when the one who orders the commission understands that from a same design, different artists will end up with different final sculptures, depending of each skills, vision, methods, etc...
C'était déjà très intéressant de pouvoir travailler le même design à une nouvelle échelle, mais la partie la plus intéressante fût de savoir que j'étais libre d'apporter ma propre vision du concept, de ne pas nécessairement avoir à suivre les pas d'Adrian ou Joaquin, comme Joaquin l'avait lui-même fait d'ailleurs.
Très excitant !
J'apprécie vraiment quand on fait confiance à un artiste, et surtout lorsque celui qui passe une commande comprend que différents artistes obtiendront un résultat différent, des sculptures différentes depuis le même design, cela dépendant du talent de chacun, de sa vision, de ses méthodes, etc...
And then, here comes my version of this Dwarf !
Actually, since I decided I was not going to follow Joaquin's vision, I don't consider he is the same character at just an other scale.
For me, he is an other Dwarf Lord, but still with lot of character in it ! :)
And, as I am writting these lines, I still don't know how he will be called, if people at Terrible Kids Stuff decide to give him the same name than the 75 mm version, or go for an other one.
My own choice has been to stay close to Adrian's work.
Several reasons to that :
First, I loved his design already as it was.
Second, since Joaquin's version was a bit more personal, more "inspired" by the original art than following it, I thought it was a good challenge to just try to "enhance" Adrian's illustration.
En fait, puisque j'ai choisi de ne pas suivre la vision de Joaquin, je ne considère pas avoir sculpté le même personnage à simplement une autre échelle.
Pour moi, c'est un autre Seigneur Nain, mais avec malgré tout beaucoup de caractère ! :)
D'ailleurs, alors que j'écris ces lignes, je ne connais toujours pas son nom, ni si les gens de Terrible Kids Stuff lui donneront le même nom que la version 75mm, ou en choisiront un autre.
Mon choix fût de rester proche du travil d'Adrian.
Plusieurs raisons à cela :
D'abord, j'adore son design comme il est.
Ensuite, parce que la version de Joaquin semblait plus personnelle, plus "inspirée" par le concept original que le suivant, j'ai pensé que c'était un bon challenge de simplement essayer d'"améliorer" l'illustration d'Adrian.
So, finally, this is the result of this approach, interprating the pose and details, changing and adapting them to get the mood I was feeling from the design and getting a 22 mm tall (at the eyes) version of it !
Because that is also a real deal to adapt a design to this scale !

I also changed the design of the weapon, trying to stick to a more "conventional" vision, with a rather "celtic" design, closer to lot of details on the Dwarf and his Shield as well.
The Shield by the way was also interesting to create for I did not have a proper design.
I choose then to go for something simple, letting skilled painters the possibility to create freehands, and yet, offering to those who want only to go for efficiency, enough details to have a nice result without too much effort.
I hope you'll find it very enjoying to paint, almost as much as I did to sculpt him !

J'ai également changé le design de son arme, essayant de coller à une vison plus "conventionnelle", avec un design un peu plus "celtique", plus proche de beaucoup des détails du Nain et de son Bouclier.
D'ailleurs, le Bouclier fût aussi très intéressant à créer car je n'avais pas de design à proprement parler.
J'ai alors choisi d'aller vers quelque chose de simple, offrant aux peintres confirmés la possibilité de réaliser des freehands, et laissant à ceux recherchant l'efficacité assez de détails pour obtenir un résultat agréable sans trop d'effort.
J'espère que vous le trouverez très agréable à peindre, presque autant que j'ai pris de plaisir à le sculpter !

Though the range of Terrible Kids Stuff is rather "tall" (54 mm, 75 mm...), they started to commission some models at a 32mm "scale", and since it's my speciality, they thought I could get something nice from this art.Actually, I am currently working on 54mm models... But this will be for other articles... ;)

Bien que la collection Terrible Kids Stuff soit plutôt "grande" (54mm, 75mm...), il ont commencé à commander des modèles à l'"échelle" 32mm, et puisque c'est ma spécialité, ils ont pensé que je pourrai sortir un truc sympa de ce concept.En fait, je travaille actuellement sur des modèles 54 mm...
